CIRCUIT (Electrical Sensitivity Support Group)

PO Box 1UZ

NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE      NE99 1UZ

Founded in 1992, CIRCUIT is the independent, not for profit organisation for the increasing concern about the potential health hazards of electromagnetic fields, in particular electrical hypersensitivity (EHS).  Circuit recognises electricity as a valuable form of energy which benefits society in many ways, but is very aware that just as some people are hypersensitive to pollen or peanuts, for example, there are those individuals who experience adverse health effects whilst using or being in the vicinity of devices emanating electric, magnetic or electromagnetic fields.  People with electrical hypersensitivity are usually also chemically sensitive;  EHS and multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) tend to go hand in hand.  (It is well known in the medical profession that certain chemicals can sensitise humans to radiation and the impact of a cocktail of chemicals could be more far-reaching than previously thought, also striking differences have been discovered in the way children and adults process drugs and most of the medicines for new-born babies and about half of those aimed at children are untested on young people.)  EHS and MCS can be very disabling and isolating illnesses for the affected persons.  The World Health Authority (WHO) now recognises MCS.  EHS has been gaining recognition as a serious physiological condition for many years.  The first WHO International Conference on EHS took place in Prague, Czech Republic in October 2004.  In September 2007 the EU's European Environment Agency expressed concern about the long term and cumulative effects of electromagnetic radiation from the rapidly expanding new technologies and said it would be prudent for health authorities to recommend actions to reduce exposures, especially to vulnerable groups ...

"What is seldom mentioned in the EHS literature is that some people die due to the severity of their case and the lack of treatments/proper EMR reduction.  It should be further noted that typical medical tests such as X-Rays may not be tolerated by the EHS, preventing proper diagnosis/treatment of other serious conditions, such as cancer.  Also, hospital can be electromagnetically and chemically intolerable; these are personal tolerance issues." The strength of the electric and magnetic fields depends upon the current intensity carried through a conductor and the distance of exposure from the source...  Currently, in Canada an 80m wide exclusion zone exists around each power line, within which residential homes are not built...  Among more than 7,000 scientific publications about the potential effects of EMF exposure, an extensive number of reviews have been written relating to EMF exposure and human health.  The findings of recent studies are also indicative of indirect effects of power lines ... These studies, along with other recent findings, have sharpened the focus even more on the potential dangers of EMFs to public health ... Studies showed that EMFs influence the development, reproduction, and physiology of insects (Greenberg et al, 1981) and mammals (Burchard et al, 1996), but the purpose of this review is to consider the breeding biology of a taxon (ie birds) that lives most intimately with power lines and therefore exposed to EMFs ... the effects of EMFs on various aspects of avian breeding biology are considered, specifically whether EMF exposure alters birds' behaviour, reproductive success, growth and development, physiology, endocrine and immune systems, and oxidative stress.  Oxidative stress has been implicated in cancer, neurodegenerative disease, and aging in humans.  The directions in which future research should proceed are also discussed if studies of avian species nesting in close proximity to power lines are to contribute to our understanding of how EMFs affect physiological systems and the breeding biology of organisms.  There is little doubt that such studies will also have direct implications for human health ..."

Electrosmog in the Environment by the Swiss Agency for the Environment, Forests and Landscape SAEFL, June 2005.  "Various studies have revealed, however, that biological reactions may occur even if field strengths are below the internationally defined thresholds.  These reactions are referred to as subliminal effects.  Experiments conducted on both animals and human beings have identified changes in behaviour, interference with learning capacity and impacts on the hormone system.  For example, it has been found that lower than usual levels of the hormone melatonin are produced.  Melatonin controls the biological day/night cycle, has a stimulating effect on the immune system and inhibits the growth of tumours.  Melatonin deficiencies are associated with sleep-disorders, tiredness and depressive states.  Research has also identified a variety of other impacts of low-frequency fields, including influences on growth and metabolism of cells and changes in genetic material." (page 7).  This brochure makes interesting reading and is available FREE of charge in .pdf format from www.buwalshop.ch (order code: DIV-5801-E) or Swiss Federal Office for the Environment, Non-Ionising Radiation Section, CH 3003 Bern, Switzerland.

Electromagnetic Fields and Neuro-Degenerative Disease.  A 24 page booklet.  The National Radiological Protection Board NRPB) Advisory Group on Non-ionising Radiation produced this overview covering Parkinson, Motor Neurone Disease and Alzheimers and the relationship in the development of these diseases to EMFs and prior exposure to electric fields.

NRPB Document Volume 15 No2 2004:  Advice on Limiting Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields (0-300GHz).  An easy to read 35 page booklet, in which the the NRPB makes some very interesting statements about electromagnetic field levels for exposure to the general public.  It covers a wide range of concerns including childhood leukaemia, mobile phones, long-terms effects of EMFs, VDUs, people at risk from induced electric fields, experimental studies using volunteers and ethical constraints, scientific uncertainty etc.

Proposals for Limiting Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields (0 to 300Ghz):  Summary of comments received on the May 2003 Consultation Document and responses from the NRPB  Published July 2004.  ISBN 0-85951-540-0.  Price £13.  An easy to read 27 page booklet, in which the NRPB explains its present understanding of electrical hypersensitivity (also known as electrical sensitivity, electromagnetic sensitivity, electromagnetic hypersensitivity and electrosensitivity) and says that further research on this topic would be most useful and should be encouraged.  It is also positive that the NRPB cites its support for Professor Olle Johansson's work in Sweden on electrical hypersensitivity - Professor Johansson is a medical expert; he has an excellent understanding; he shines like a beacon for electrically sensitive people throughout the world.  We very much hope that Professor Johansson receives the funding he needs to continue his research.

Electronic smog:  the curse of the mobile phone age: around your home there are countless gadgets whose electrical fields, scientists now warn are linked to depression, miscarriage and cancer by Geoffrey Lean, Environment Editor, The Independent on Sunday (7th May 2006). "Invisible "smog" created by the electricity that powers our civilisation, is giving children cancer, causing miscarriages and suicides and making some people allergic to modern life, new scientific evidence reveals. The evidence, which is being taken seriously by national and international bodies and authorities, suggests that almost everyone is being exposed to a new form of pollution with countless sources in daily use in every home."

The Boiled Frog Syndrome:  Your Health and the Built Environment by Thomas Saunders (2002). ISBN 0-470-84553-8.  Published by John Wiley and Sons.

The title is taken from the disturbing fact that :  "If a frog jumps into a pan of warm water, it will immediately jump out again.  However, if a frog is placed in a pan of cold water that is then gradually heated, the frog continues to adjust its body temperature awareness to the increasing water temperature until, ultimately it is boiled alive.  The modern (man-made) environment affects us all and humans are living in levels of increasing subtle background pollution. It briefly covers topics such as contaminated land and then examines various aspects of sick-building syndrome.  About a third of the book is devoted to electromagnetic fields - what they are, what they do, etc.  The second half of the book touches on, amongst other things, ancient wisdom, allopathic and holistic medicine and alternative technology.  Well worth reading.

Skewed:  Psychiatric hegemony and the manufacture of mental illness in multiple chemical sensitivity, gulf war syndrome, myalgic encephalomyelitis and chronic fatigue syndrome by Martin J Walker (2003).  ISBN 0-951-9646-4X.  Skewed illustrates how patients suffer under a psychiatric paradigm which deems clinical investigation of their problems inappropriate and unnecessary.  In his perceptive forward, Professor of Psychiatry Per Dalen, MD, PhD, of the Universityof Gothenburg in Sweden says: "Readers who are not yet familiar with the tragic erosion of the truth-seeking scientific spirit in medical research will, I hope, also find this book an excellent introduction to these problems."  Available from Slingshot Productions Ltd, BM Box 8314, London, WC1N 3XX, or from Cygnus Books.

Brave New World of Zero Risk:  Covert Strategy in British Science Policy by Martin J Walker (2005). Published by Slingshot Publications.  Until further notice this book is only available as a downloadable FREE pdf file from the Zero Risk website at www.zero-risk.org.  "... The National Health Service, set up originally to provide health care regardless of income to the British people has been sold off bit by bit mainly to pharmaceutical interests.  The most serious consequence of letting corporate interests look after science, medicine and health is that the independence of science and any possible independence of health care has been obliterated.  Corporate lobby groups ... preach zero risk and claim that new technologies can cause no harm.  This book examines the contemporary corporate politics of science in two areas, that of MMR (Mumps, Measles and Rubella) vaccination and the illness of ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis).  It shows how those who have fought for independent science have been bullied, attacked and discredited, using political strategies which have nothing to do with science and everything to do with power and profit.
